Hundreds of Rotarians under Rotary International District 9111 will be converging on Abeokuta at the end of this month for their pioneer district conference.
Tagged Irresistible District Conference 2025, the District Governor of Rotary 9111, Dr Wole Kukoyi, stated that the gathering would provide an opportunity for Rotarians to interact, share ideas, and showcase various humanitarian and community services carried out by the 75 clubs within the district.
According to him, the forum, which will be held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Kuto, Abeokuta, will feature inspiring sessions, insightful discussions, and networking opportunities with leaders from Nigeria and abroad.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, Kukoyi seized the occasion to provide updates on some humanitarian services and community projects undertaken by the district, stressing that they remain a priority despite the nation’s economic challenges.
Some of the projects, he said, include the construction and equipping of a sickle cell centre, alongside other community initiatives carried out by the 75 clubs within the district.
“Our naira is quite weak in terms of exchange. In spite of this, we still prioritise all our activities in Rotary. So we do not allow the exchange rate to dictate our level of commitment. Instead, we ensure that our communities do not suffer due to the economic situation.
“All the activities we have previously engaged in have continued, even at a larger scale. This year, our third project is the construction and equipping of a sickle cell centre, worth hundreds of millions of naira. As we speak, the project is nearly completed, and we will be commissioning it before 30th June, as promised.”
The District Governor of Rotary 9111 added that DISCON will commence with royal visits to Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, and Oba (Dr) Adedapo Tejuoso (Karunwi III), the Osile of Oke-Ona Egba, a former President of the Rotary Club of Ikeja-South and a Past District Governor of Rotary District 9110.
Past Assistant Governor of District 9110 and Chairman of the DISCON Committee, Rotarian Busola Satuyi, announced that a novelty football match between Rotary District 9111 and Lion District 404 A3 will take place at Afro Grammar School Stadium, Ita-Eko, Abeokuta. This will be followed by an all-white Welcome Party at Kesington Hall, Abeokuta Sports Club, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.
She stated, “The Governor of Ogun State, Mr Dapo Abiodun, will declare the DISCON open on Friday, 30th May, while the Deputy Governor, Engr Noimot Salako-Oyedele, will deliver a keynote address. Dr Chizor Malize, Managing Director of the Financial Institutions Training Centre (FITC), will also present a paper on Guidance of Integrity: Strengthening Compliance in NGOs to Combat Fraud and Money Laundering.”
Rotarian Henry Akinyele, the District Governor-Elect, while highlighting some of the planned events, noted that the conference would be comprehensive, covering all aspects of Rotary activities, rules, by-laws, and policies to ensure continuity or necessary changes.
Dignitaries expected to grace the three-day conference and deliver goodwill messages include former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Olota of Ota, Oba Professor Adeyemi Obalanlege, a representative of Stephanie Urchick (Rotary International President), Rotarian Eric Kimani (a Past District Governor from Rotary Club of Nairobi Muthaiga North, Kenya), among others.
