AMAC Labour Party pioneers townhall meeting for female aspirants

The Labour Party in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has taken a bold step towards promoting transparency and accountability in its electoral process by introducing a town hall meeting where aspirants, including female candidates, will be grilled by delegates ahead of the primaries.

AMAC Party Chairman, Hon Ifeanyi Ugochukwu, speaking with journalists after the “Big Debate for LP AMAC Chairmanship Aspirants” held on Saturday in Abuja, said the initiative is designed to present Labour Party aspirants who wish to contest in the upcoming area council elections.

“They will present themselves before the delegates in the primary elections and also answer questions on topical issues bothering AMAC,” Ugochukwu stated.

“We need to do something different from what is obtainable. If we want to change Nigeria, if we want to change the narrative, we need those who are going to represent us to come and talk to us,” he added.

According to him, the town hall meeting provides a platform for aspirants to showcase their vision and ideas directly to the delegates who will vote in the primaries.

“We want to place all the aspirants on a hot seat for them to tell us what they have to offer to us. And so I believe that through this process, we will be able to produce the best of the best,” he said.

Ugochukwu stressed that the process will be open and transparent, with the media playing a crucial role in ensuring accountability.

“We are going to get the media involved in all our processes. The media will be there. So if we say it is free and fair, even the media can also present it because they are part and parcel of the process,” he noted.

The chairman expressed confidence that this interactive platform will help the party field strong, credible candidates.

“We will not be afraid when our candidate is outside. We can beat our chest and say that this person can represent us,” he said.

The initiative has been well-received by party members and delegates, who see it as a refreshing shift from traditional candidate selection methods.

By engaging directly with delegates, the Labour Party is fostering a more inclusive and participatory electoral process—one that could shape its future electoral prospects.

“By producing candidates who are accountable and responsive to the needs of their constituents, the Labour Party can build trust and credibility with voters,” Ugochukwu said.

“As the party continues with this new approach, it will be interesting to see how it impacts the electoral landscape in AMAC. One thing is certain: the Labour Party is committed to transparency and accountability, and this initiative is a significant step in the right direction,” he concluded.
